To all CUTG members:
As British representative on the organising committee, I am at last
able to give you some information about the next IVG conference, as
promised at the Newcastle meeting. I must apologise for the delay, but
the organisation is only just getting under way. The conference will be
held in Paris, at the Centre universitaire Malesherbes of the Sorbonne
(Université de Paris IV) in the week beginning 22 August or 29 August
2005. The precise dates will be known later this year. It looks as if
it will be a very successful event - the venue has excellent facilities
and is well situated in the 17th arrondissement, near the Parc Monceau.
There will be the usual full programme of associated events and
excursions. A call for papers will be going out at the end of this
year.
The website is still http://www.univie.ac.at/Germanistik/ivg/ but this
may be changed in the near future. If you try finding it through a
search engine, be warned that IVG in French is the standard
abbreviation for 'interruption volontaire de grossesse'. This would
seem to provide rich opportunities for misunderstanding (will we be
picketed by Pro-Life groups?), but it doesn't seem to have worried
anyone yet.
As those of you who are already members will know from the circular
which was sent out last year, the membership fee for the IVG is 100
Euros for the five year period 2001-2005, and this is now due. The bank
charges for transferring a sum of this kind from the UK to France are
extortionate, and to avoid these, I have arranged that any British
member or prospective member can send me the sterling equivalent, and I
will transfer all the money to the IVG account in one lump sum, thus
saving considerably on bank charges. If you wish to avail yourself of
this possibility, please send me a cheque for £72 made payable to 'The
University of Manchester' by 15 September this year.
Please note that only members of the IVG will be entitled to give a
paper at the conference. Anyone wishing to join should complete the
membership form available at
http://www.univie.ac.at/Germanistik/ivg/Mitgliedschaft.htm and send it
to Professor Valentin at the Sorbonne (but send the dues to me as
detailed above). I will of course be willing to answer queries any
colleagues might have.
All the best,
Martin Durrell
