Two linked fully-funded NERC PhD research studentships on Rapid Climate
Change at Southampton and Swansea.
Applications are invited for TWO NERC PhD studentships tied to RAPID
Climate Change programme grant NER/T/S/2002/00460, *ISOMAP-UK: a combined
data - modelling investigation of water isotopes and their interpretation
during rapid climate change events*. These studentships offer the chance
to work on cutting edge climate change research and to join an
interdisciplinary team of researchers under ISOMAP-UK - see the
presentation by the project leader Dr Jonathan Holmes on the NERC website at
http://www.nerc.ac.uk/funding/thematics/rcc/documents/holmes.pdf.
The studentship based at the Palaeoecology Laboratory University of
Southampton (PLUS) will exploit the peat bog record and is entitled
*Tracking rapid climate change from peat bog stable isotopes*. It will
involve analyses at the Stable Isotope Laboratory at University of Wales
Swansea and is therefore jointly supervised by Professor Keith Barber
(Southampton), Professor Alayne Street-Perrott and Dr Neil Loader (Swansea).
Full details are available now on the PLUS website at
http://www.soton.ac.uk/~palaeo/phds2003NERC.html
The studentship based at the Stable Isotope Laboratory of the Swansea
Geography Department will analyse the organic fraction of lake sediments
and is entitled *Tracking rapid climate change using oxygen isotopes in
aquatic cellulose*. The supervisors are Professor Alayne Street-Perrott and
Dr Iain Robertson.
Full details are available now on the Swansea Geography website at -
http://ralph.swan.ac.uk/pgrdinfo/pgradops2003.htm
Candidates must have or expect to gain a First or strong Upper Second class
degree, in Geography, Environmental Sciences, Biology, Geology or a related
subject. A recognised MSc degree in environmental or climatic change would
be an advantage. NERC has increased the PhD stipend by 50% to £12,000 (tax
free) from 1 October 2003, the starting date for this award. Candidates for
awards must have a relevant connection with the United Kingdom - see NERC
website for details of eligibility. The closing date for applications for
both awards is FRIDAY 30 MAY 2003.
