Abstract
Commissioning the Independent Inquiry into Inequalities in Health
(also known as the Acheson Inquiry) was one of the first decisions of
the incoming Labour Government in 1997. The Inquiry and
subsequent policy developments have indicated the extent to which
tackling health inequalities has become a policy priority in the UK. In
a study funded by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, Mark
Exworthy and colleagues (from
University College London) investigated the impact of the Inquiry's
recommendations on policy-making, and also examined subsequent
policy developments. Using the analysis of three case-studies of
policy-making, particular attention was paid to the systems and
processes of policy, and the mechanisms used to measure the
progress of such policies. The seminar will present findings from this
study, highlighting recent developments in policy across government
and indicating areas which require further attention. Issues raised by
the study will be discussed by the panel.
Professor Graham was also a member of the Independent Inquiry into
Inequalities in Health, Scientific Advisory Group and Dr Earwicker,
the secretary to the Inquiry. The seminar will be chaired by
Professor Sir Michael Marmot.
