I seldom say anything on this list serve. However, when I received
Prof. Berger's email / petition, I was elated. We study, we read, we
engage, we argue, we learn... Let me amend that, we learn nothing from
literature, from art, from Spenser, from humanism, from the past if we
truly think that a political statement against war is a misuse of a
forum for passionate intellectual exchange.
We "cannot praise a fugitive and cloistered virtue" and we must speak
our minds in this instance wherever we can.
