IDENTITY AND TIME
IDENTITY AND SPACE
Part of the ESRC-funded Seminar Programme entitled 'Accessing Identity'
Hosted by the Department of Marketing, University of Stirling
Identity and Time: Wednesday 23 April 2003
Identity and Space: Thursday 24 April 2003
The Management Centre, Stirling
For the last two seminars of the ESRC funded seminar series on Accessing
Identity we are holding a two day mini-conference. The theme will be the
changing and sometimes contradictory relationships between identity, time
and space. Delegates can attend either one or both days. Each seminar will
draw on the research of a number of disciplines, including sociology, social
anthropology, history, geography, literature and heritage. Our intention
is to enhance understanding of the relationships between identity and time
and identity and space by engaging with varying and possibly diverse understandings.
The Accessing Identity series aims to create and facilitate dialogue between
a number of interested groups including academics, postgraduate students
and research fellows, management practitioners and employees in the public
and private sectors, government agencies, charities and not-for-profit
organisations, politicians and political organisations, inter alia. The
seminar programme aims to share and discuss academic work across the many
disciplines which have an intellectual interest in the issues under discussion
and to move forward their practical potential with an audience of prospective
users. As such, the seminar series offers a new and challenging approach
to discussion on questions of identity. The seminars will be of interest
to those studying sociology, anthropology, history, geography, heritage
studies and cultural studies. After the presentations from a range of speakers,
we conclude with a Panel Discussion which aims to bring together and explore
the emergent issues from the series of presentations. It is envisaged that
a significant amount of time will be given to interaction, participation
and discussion, particularly during the latter stages of the event.
Speakers
The speakers will reflect a mix of disciplines, allowing for insights to
be drawn from different academic experiences. Although there will be no
practitioners presenting, we intend to guide the discussion to consider
the practical implications of the presentations. Provisional titles from
some speakers are given below:
Paul du Gay, Open University, 'Notes towards a sociology of "persons"'
Murray Pittock, Strathclyde University, 'When was Scotland Scotland: moments
of identity from Tacitus to Thatcher'
