To add to this from a UK perspective: Records Managers who have an
archives/records management professional qualification accredited by the
Society of Archivists (UCL, Liverpool, Bangor, Aberystwyth, Dublin and
Northumbria diplomas/masters degrees) or an overseas equivalent
qualification, have the option of becoming Registered Members of the
Society
of Archivists (RMSA). This involves completing the Registration Scheme,
which requires a minimum of three years professional experience and putting
together a portfolio of twelve credits covering three of four areas (Work
achievements, Contribution to the Profession, Private study/personal
research and Formal training courses).
Registration is intended to act as a mark of professional competence and
commitment to continuing professional development, and the Registration
Scheme can be undertaken equally well by archivists, records managers or

You might wish to visit the website of the Institute of Certified Records
Managers (http://www.icrm.org). They offer the certified records manager
designation which is achieved via a series of six exams. The final exam
Part
VI consists of case studies. Once the designation is achieved members must
earn 100 certification maintenance points during a 5 year cycle in order to
maintain their certification. Complete information about the program can be

Although the majority of its members are in North America the Institute
does
have international members.
