As convenor of the Society of Archivists working party that produced the
publication to which Paul refers I guess I should weigh in with my
penny-worth.
The publication is:
SCHOOL RECORDS Their Management & Retention
Society of Archivists Records Management Group
1995
From the date you will see that it is now relatively old, so it needs to be
used with caution as things have moved on apace. I really need to have it
revised!
We went, in general, for the minimum possible retention (although providing
for permanent retention where the class was of archive value). So in some
cases, such as Pupil Files, what we specified is now too short. Child
Protection issues in the late 90s would make for a longer retention - at the
very least until child age 25.
Admin Memo 531 (of 1956), cited as an appendix, has been withdrawn by the
DfEE.
And, of course, the rapid expansion of IT applications will have had a
marked impact on what we wrote in the mid-Nineties.

Dear Colleagues,
The Society of Archivists published a guide of retention schedules in
schools several years ago. It may be worth contacting them.

Subject: School Records- FOI
Dear Colleagues
I am in the process of finalising my timetable for FOI implementation. I
see from the Information Commissioner's timetable that schools will not be
required to send in their Publication Scheme until October- December 2004.
Does this mean that there will be some slippage in getting the schools to
comply with the access to all records on the 1st Jan 2005?
I also see that the RMS retention schedule does not include school records.
Has anyone come across any records retention guidance for school records,
such as Governor's Minutes.
Looking at the legislation, DFES requires signed minutes to be kept but does
not state how long they need to be retained for.
