Thanks Carlo. I agree that the original text in the stanza which intrigues
Nicole is very hazed and at times obviously incorrect, therefore, the
translator should try firstly to recompose the syntactic order.
To get a more harmonious idea of what the spirit of this 18th century
cantata be, it would be useful to read Parini..
Indeed the status of certain elements in this popular cantata, such
as ‘altre mole’; 'isdegna', for example, recall Parini's ‘Il Giorno’
(see: 'e non isdegna/la picciola guaina ove al tuo cenno/mille ognora stan
pronti argentei spilli', 970)
Again, the idea of 'lofty' places/residences, in the same poem ‘Il
Giorno’, is followed by the use of the attribute 'bella' for the cold
unsympathetic woman that disdains her admirer's proffer of love and
dedication.
(see: ‘Volgi, o invitto campion, volgi tu pure
il generoso piè dove la bella
e de gli eguali tuoi scelto drappello
sbadigliando t’aspetta all’alte mense.’)
The expression ‘Vittorie raminghe’ in the cantata seems to be an ironic
lessening of Parini’s epic grandeur. In fact, it seems to me that
Parini’s ‘alte mense’ is the controlled and elevated form which the
contaminated ‘altre mole’ seems to be imitating .
