Hello All
My local Primary Care Trust in its capacity as commissioner for health
services for the local population is constantly being hassled by the local
acute hospital Trust to spend an extra £600K per annum on a service
development.
There is a good evidence base for the service but the PCT is wondering what
else it could do with this money (if it had it) & the health gain associated
with alternative investments.
I did some work with Adrian Bagust ages ago which showed large benefits from
cheap drugs in heart failure patients in the community which reduced
morbidity, mortality & hospital bed use (Although getting GPs to implement
change might be a slow process...)and suggested that the Health Authority we
worked with should shift its investment priorities & its efforts to increase
health gain from its resource neutral base.
It's tempting to say local PCT choices depend on local priorities & issues
but as all of our priorities are imposed from the centre & as everything is
a priority I want to ask if anybody can suggest some good buys for PCTs?
What would you do with 600K to maximise health gain tomorrow?
Any thoughts would be appreciated
Thanks
Ruth McDonald
