Dear All,
I think Mark's invitation to people on the disability
list to apply to research a Doctorate, possibly with
funding, is a wonderful opportunity. There will be
those who, for a variety of reasons not necessarily
connected with impairment, will not be in a position
to take up this kind offer. That is not oppression,
it is reality!! Do we engage in the practice of
categorisating everything that some individuals cannot
take part in, however beautiful and valid in its own
right, as a general oppression directed at those
particular individuals? It is precisely this type of
disingenuous activity that creates tensions in
relation to the advancement of rights etc, for people
in whose lives impairment is a feature.
Academic voices lend credibility to the disability
movement, a salient point that should not be
forgotten. In striving for a just society, there will
be more than one way to achieve the desired result,
and a multiplicity of people from various backgrounds
have a role to play. The world of academia has
contributed generously to the advancement of
emancipatory goals. I am convinced that undertaking
Doctoral research represents an important contribution
to this process.
Regards
Hazel
