Hello,
the same goes for AstraZeneca - i.e. a lot of challenges regarding metadata
and standards in taxonomy and nomenclature. After the DC2002 conference in
Florence I do personally have a great interest in learning more about the
application profile mechanism. Even though I would doubt the need for a
generic corporate application profile.

One of the challenges in the Pharma industry is the exploitation of key
information sources, internal as well as external. In AstraZenenca we are
discussing a DC implementation for internal information and are initiating a
smaller Proof-of-Concept activity to be able to decide on what level to
apply DC. In that activity we would like to better understand the potentials
of application profiles.

Sandra has raised the question of a corporate application profile, which I
think is an interesting discussion for sharing experiences of setting up
metadata standard frameworks within our corporations. However, I don't see
any immediate need for a specific adoption of DC for corporations in
general.

For me applications profiles are a key mechanism in describing and enabling
mapping of heterogonous information sources to used by e.g. search engines.

I have raised the following questions to key people in the DC community,
that is Rachel Heery and Makx Dekkers, working with application profiles:

- Do you regard application profiles as a concept matured enough to take
into use in large organisation with a broad range of semi-structured
repositories?

- Do you see RDF schema as the "standard" encoding format for application
profiles in the future? What would be the potential alternatives?

- When do you think the kind of tools presented at DC2002 by Rachel Heery
and Dave Beckett 1), to encode application profiles are coming also for
commercial use?

- When do you foresee that information exploitations mechanisms such as
commercial search engine spiders will be using application profiles to
enhance the way content, and metadata, are acquired and indexed?

I did send these as input to an interesting workshop earlier this month 2).
I do look forward to get some feedback from Makx and Rachel.

It would also be interesting to see if anyone else have similar thinking of
the value of application profiles (not a good name I think - I prefer to
call them source profiles)

Hello,
We might be interested as well. I have certain enjoyed the
conversation that has continued over these items. At DaimlerChrysler we
are also challenged with numerous areas that need standards in taxonomy and
nomenclature. In addition we are a global company which adds to the
complexity. I would like to have us to be considered as well. Thanks!

So far Nancy Linwood, Igor Perisic, and Lisa Chan have expressed interest
in doing some work on a corporate application profile. Is there anyone
else? If not, then I have a process kind of question - I imagine it would
make more sense if the small group interacted outside of this list and
posted periodic updates or questions to the larger list?
