Community Social Psychology in the aftermath of war,
civil strife and mass oppression: the case of Guatemala
Jorge Morio Flores Osorio, Director of research,
Autonomous University of the State of Morelos, Cuernavaca,
Mexico
Friday April 25th 2.30-3.30 followed by discussion.
Maya indigenous communities in Guatemala suffered what has
been described as a programme of genocide at the hands of
the Guatemalan army in the 1980’s and early 90’s.
Jorge Mario Flores has been working in conjunction with an
interdisciplinary group on projects of community rebuilding,
memory and commemoration, and the pursuit of justice in the
face of impunity. He uses frameworks from community social
psychology as well as other currents in the Latin American
liberatory tradition to conceptualise and develop this work.
The talk will be in Spanish with English translation.
(Jorge will be an academic visitor in the Department of
Psychology and Speech pathology for three weeks from April
22nd. If you would like to arrange a meeting with him to
discuss some topics of interest, please contact Prof. Car9olyn
Kagan by e-mailing { HYPERLINK "mailto:[log in to unmask]" [log in to unmask] Please indicate
whether you would need Spanish translation at a meeting. We
would like to arrange for Jorge to visit interesting community
based projects, so if you would be able to host such a visit,
please let Carolyn know as above.)
