I agree with those who are cautious about having too many
guidelines/restrictions on what to send to the list and on who can
send it. However, it is important that we do not make the list a safe
place to express ideas that are racist, heterosexist, disabilist,
heterosexist etc. Indeed, that is why I don't wish to belong to a
community of psychologists but rather would prefer to belong to a
community of critical and community psychologists.
There is also the danger that not having written guidelines or
restrictions does negate the existence of unwritten guidelines or
restrictions. Contributors might fall fowl of the wrath of our
community unless we are explicit about the implicit rules we may
be operating with. In that regard I favour opacity even if that risk
appearing that we are over the top with our guidelines.
Of course, I concede that had it not been for a couple of postings
containing some characterisations of East Anglian folk in the UK
(that's my birthplace by the way) and a recent request for research
participants, that we may have lacked the stimulus for us to
discuss these issues.
