The JISC invites proposals to undertake projects that help to develop
interoperability between publishers and aggregators and the JISC Information
Environment (IE). The Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC), working
closely with the Publishers and Library/Learning Solutions (PALS)
Interoperability and Metadata Group, intends to fund a number of Metadata
and Interoperability projects to highlight and explore the issues
surrounding the adoption of metadata standards by publishers for their
electronic publications.

To achieve the objectives of the initiative, three main areas of project
focus have been identified:
· A: Publisher and aggregator interoperability projects
· B: Publisher initiative interoperability projects
· C: Related documentation and case studies

Proposals are invited from publishers of all kinds of materials, including
smaller publishers and publishers of resources in newer formats; and from
partnerships between publishers and Further and Higher Education
institutions. In particular it is expected that suitable FE and HE partners
will include JISC production services and development projects.

Publishers do not need an academic partner to submit proposals for these
projects.

Brief proposals of no more than 4 sides of A4 are required by noon on Monday
7th April 2003. Details of the
proposed work, background information, the bidding process and useful URLs
are set at:

http://www.jisc.ac.uk/index.cfm?name=funding_5_03

To assist publishers, especially those who are unfamiliar with
interoperability and the application of standards, the PALS Interoperability
and Metadata Working Group have compiled an FAQ which is available at:
