Fixed term until 31 December 2003
£27,585 to £28,404 pa inc.
To work on the EU-funded Voice for Information Society Universal
Access and Learning (VISUAL) Project
E-learning is opening up many educational opportunities for people to
study whenever and wherever it is convenient to them. One group of
people who can potentially benefit greatly from e-learning, whose
needs should not be forgotten, are those with disabilities. The
EU-funded VISUAL Project is investigating access to e-learning for
students with visual disabilities and aims to:
(i) develop a demonstration e-learning web portal for students with
visual disabilities
(ii) develop guidelines to ensure the accessibility of e-learning
resources for visually disabled students
(iii) explore the use of VoiceXML in the development of e-learning
resources for visually disabled students
(iv) develop an authoring tool which is accessible to visually
disabled people for the development of e-learning resources (the tool
will of course produce accessible resources and incorporate the
guidelines developed within the project)
City University London is a partner in the VISUAL project - other
partners include the Catholic University of Leuven (Belgium),
Deutscher Blinden und Sehebehindertenverband (Germany), European
Blind Union (France), Federation des Aveugles et Handicapes Visuals
de France (France), International Software Factory (Spain), Royal
National Institute for the Blind (UK), Soluziona Telecomunicaciones
(Spain), and Unione Italiana Ciechi (Italy).
At City University we are leading the development of the user
requirements for accessible e-learning resources and e-learning
authoring tools, and the evaluation of a series of prototypes of both
the e-learning web portal and the authoring tool.
The successful candidates will require academic and/or industrial
experience in eliciting user requirements and conducting evaluations
of prototype systems, preferably with disabled or elderly people.
Both positions will be on the RAII Research Assistant scale (up to
£28,275 plus £2,134 London allowance, according to experience and
qualifications).
Candidates should have a good first degree in psychology, computer
science, or other subject with relevance to human-computer
interaction. A post-graduate or higher degree in one of these
subjects is required for the Senior Position. A knowledge of the
needs of people with disabilities is essential for both posts.
Further particulars and an application form can be downloaded from
www.city.ac.uk/hr/jobs. Alternatively send a large (A4) stamped
(41p) addressed envelope to Spencer Webb, HR Department, City
University, Northampton Square, London, EC1V OHB, detailing your name
address and post reference number SW/8728. Informal enquiries can be
made to Professor Helen Petrie.
