Hello all,
this is a call for comments/suggestions/etc on my current EU-funded project
which is about "The portrayal of archaeology in contemporary popular
culture - opportunity or obstacle for the promotion of cultural heritage?"
Archaeologists themselves have often felt uneasy about their image in
popular culture. My study will investigate what the popular image of
archaeology actually looks like and if and how it stands in the way of
promoting archaeology/cultural heritage. In order to give the results wider
relevance, a comparative perspective will be chosen and fieldwork will be
conducted in Sweden, the United Kingdom, and Germany.
If you know of any particularly interesting or unexpected appearances of
archaeology in popular culture, or if you have strong opinions about the
usefulness (or uselessness) of the popular image of archaeology, please let
me know! The same applies to any existing studies you are aware of (but
maybe I am not). So far I have found a lot of work on the situation in
Germany and some on Sweden but not very much at all for the UK. To hear
about research elsewhere would also be interesting for me, and I have
already had some contact to colleagues in the US.
