5.1 Scaffolding Research in Computer Science Education
** Announcement & Call for Participation
Deadline: March 31, 2003.
http://depts.washington.edu/srcse/
"Scaffolding" is an NSF-funded project to be run over the next two
years which aims to:
* develop skills (in the design, conduct and management of research
in computer science education) of Computer Science educators by
exposing them to relevant theory and methods, and
* facilitate the establishment of research relationships,
contributing to a research community able to sustain a constructive
discourse as well as ongoing collaboration.
We are currently inviting applications from people who may be
interested in participating. NSF funding (pending official
notification) is available to pay for all lodging, food, and workshop
expenses for US participants in higher-education (including community
and technical colleges, undergraduate and graduate universities). We
are interested in faculty from underrepresented groups, or who are
serving students from these groups; additional travel subsidies are
available in order to increase the diversity of the participant pool.
Full details of funding support and of the program as a whole are
available at:
http://depts.washington.edu/srcse/
Applications (online) are due March 31, 2003.

5.2 JISC Call for Proposals: Publisher Metadata & Interoperability
Projects
The JISC invites proposals to undertake projects that help to develop
interoperability between publishers and aggregators and the
JISCInformation Environment (IE). The Joint Information Systems
Committee (JISC), working closely with the Publishers and
Library/Learning Solutions (PALS) Interoperability and Metadata
Group, intends to fund a number of Metadata and Interoperability
projects to highlight and explore the issues surrounding the adoption
of metadata standards by publishers for their electronic
publications.
To achieve the objectives of the initiative, three main areas of
project focus have been identified:
* A: Publisher and aggregator interoperability projects
* B: Publisher initiative interoperability projects
* C: Related documentation and case studies
Proposals are invited from publishers of all kinds of materials,
including smaller publishers and publishers of resources in newer
formats; and from partnerships between publishers and Further and
Higher Education institutions. In particular it is expected that
suitable FE and HE partners will include JISCproduction services and
development projects. Publishers do not need an academic partner to
submit proposals for these projects.
Brief proposals of no more than 4 sides of A4 are required by noon on
Monday 7th April 2003.
Details of the proposed work, background information, the bidding
process and useful URLs are set at:
http://www.jisc.ac.uk/index.cfm?name=funding_5_03
To assist publishers, especially those who are unfamiliar with
interoperability and the application of standards, the PALS
Interoperability and Metadata Working Group have compiled an FAQ
which is available at:
http://www.jisc.ac.uk/index.cfm?name=wg_palsinter_faq

Science.
The deadline for receipt of proposals is 12 noon on Friday 30 May
2003. A town meeting will be held on Tuesday 29 April 2003 in central
