This is all very depressing, we have a lot of experience in telemedicine for
minor injuries which I think works well and lends itself to supporting
nurses in remote areas, telepresence especially when applied to medical
conditions is altogether something else. I just can't see your average
doctor being able to give such support safely and quickly. Perhaps we are
looking at the gestation of a new specialty.... Medical telepresence. A sort
of NHS Direct employing Doctors exclusively to take calls from all over the
world advising nurses. On second thoughts after listening to Sir George
being expertly interviwed by Adrian Wogan in London last week, perhaps this
is another job (in addition to providing out of hours Primary care)for old
or burned out Ambulance personel.

PS I believe there is to be a telepresence project in Penzance later this
year using actors to simulate patients, but as I have only got wind of this
second hand, I can't tell you anything about it.

I take it back: Warwick University has a group developing electronic noses
(enoses) for various applications including medical diagnostics.
