Free public seminar
MONDAY 24th March 7.30-9.30pm
WEIGHING THE SCALES: WOMEN AND CRIMINAL JUSTICE
Between 1993 and 2000, the number of women sent to prison in Britain
increased by 115%. In the case of men it was 42%. Why is this? Is
women's
behaviour changing - or just social attitudes to it? Do women get a fair
deal from the criminal justice system? Is 'female crime' reported in a
different way from male crime? Our speakers discuss the many issues
around
gender and criminal justice: from representation in court to policing
practices, from the messages of media coverage to treatment in prison,
and
consider what might, what should, and what can be done.
The speakers are:
- Dr Maggie Wykes, University of Sheffield, author of News, Crime and
Culture (Pluto, 2001)
- Vera Baird MP QC, Chair of the Commission on Women and Criminal
Justice
- Dr Katherine Rake, Director of Fawcett
The seminar is being held at The Union Tavern, 52 Lloyd Baker Street,
London
WC1. 10 mins walk from Kings X. Free. No pre-booking required. Donations
