Ruth,
Market forces apply at the moment in GP land. So how much you pay will
depend on the local supply of GPs (and how much you want them).
No matter what people say about workload, GPs on the whole charge by the
hour regardless of the workload involved. The workload level simply makes
them more or less likely to take the work on.
It's hard to give clear advice, but this is usually between GBP40 to GBP50
per hour depending on location (if they are on call from home, 50% of the
standard rate often applies). Some co-ops will try and pay less (GBP 25-35
per hour. Some succeed in this, others do not.
Remember, GPs earn GBP150 per hour for private work, so many will choose
this over other extra-curricular activity.
