There is a lot to be said for the SG position and they have largely been ingnored by the BMA and until recently the speciality (I can hear the howls of derision). However there are some notable cases of where Consultants and Specialists have got P****ed off with the politics call it what you will of being consultants and changed to the SG position.
A close professional collegue of mine was a Consultant, then became Medical Director. When through no fault of his own the Trust started to go pear shaped (or his colleagues thought it was) he resigned and is now a SG. Very happy.
Our SG's are Senior on the shift and like all of us work proactively. They work along with the Consultant and the SHO's ask them questions etc. With the new banding they are paid K10 -12 less than the SHO's and as I have said many times on this list that I see a massive exodus to Primary Care where the quality of life is perceived to be better.
I have always been a strong protagonist of the SG post but itis a view unfortunately that has not been shared by some of my colleagues.
