To be precise, ATLS now cautions against wasting time clearing the c-spine
where the patient is unstable, particularly in cases of penetrating trauma
(where it questions the need to clear the c-spine at all). So basically,
yes, cervical spine control was felt to be killing people! And not just
because of delayed time on scene, but also because of delayed resus time
trying to clear a c-spine, when the patient should've been in theatre.
