On the H&S bit. If you are moving from static to mobile
storage do a fresh manual handling risk assessment as soon
as possible after installation. (You have, of course,
already done this for your existing system, haven't
you....) It is also worth doing an ad hoc assessment, in
advance, for the process of transferring stock if this is
going to be quite a big job. Risk assessment has very
positive aspects, in that it can indicate better ways of
doing the job generally and informs the guidelines that you
provide for staff carrying out manual handling tasks.
For the move itself, produce some brief guidance
notes, especially if you are hiring temporary staff to do
it. If you are using contractors, make sure that they are
aware of the H&S issues.
On mobile shelving itself - go for manual, go for quality,
follow the manufacturer's advice, and take a look at the
advice in British Standard BS 5454:2000. Before you buy,
make sure that prospective suppliers know exactly how you
plan to use it - i.e. direct access by users, or selected
staff access only, and frequency of use of contents. And
stop to think about frequency of use - rolling stack is not
intended for storing heavily-used material. Different
levels of usage call for different storage solutions.
