Claire,
The CAIRS RM database at Gloucestershire RO holds details of c. 200,000
files and is used for all standard RM procedures e.g. detailing transfer
lists, recording issues and retrievals, generating reminder letters,
highlighting records due for destruction, providing an audit trail of
destructions, report writing etc. The feedback I've had from staff here is
that the searching capabilities have proved invaluable over the years and
they would be sorry to see the system go.
However as I mentioned earlier, there are concerns about long term support.
Following restructuring, the company decided that they weren't going to
support a number of operating platforms (ours was one of these). Since it is
in our interests to update, hopefully CAIRS will be migrating our data onto
a new company-supportable platform. This will buy us time, and help us if we
decide at a later date to move to CALM or anything else out there. Given the
size of our database we would not be willing to move to anything that had
not already been thoroughly road-tested (I have no desire to use our rapidly
growing client base as guinea-pigs for a new system). Hope this further info
helps,
Rachel

Would be most interested to hear how you actually use CAIRS for RM -
successes and failures, long-term suitability that sort of thing? I admit
to being a bit critical of CAIRS but that is due largely to underdevelopment
on the part of the service and not the fault of the package itself.
