Whoops! I know I only left the CSP in October but still managed to get
the website wrong -CSP website address is www.csp.org.uk (missed the uk
bit off in the last posting)
Sorry folks

Subject: EBP - International Research Priorities / WCPT
Dear Stanislav, Frank and others
Prompted by the discussions on research priorities, international
replication and multi-centre trials I thought I would offer the
following observations.
Whilst at the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP) I carried out 2
national physiotherapy research prioritisation exercises and served on a
national research and development committee prioritising research across
the whole of health care - interesting experiences. In the recent
exercise I led at the CSP we used the nominal group approach and
identified 56 priorities for physiotherapy (see www.csp.org for the
reports). The exercise was designed to provide priorities to try and
influence the key funders in the UK in a more strategic way. I would not
expect what we prioritised in the UK to be the same as in another
country due to the different external environments and professional
priorities however I'm sure there will be some commonality. I would say
that prioritisation is not an exact process and simply framing questions
is problematical - in some areas more than others.
The notion of an international database of research questions and a
global network of researchers to take these forwards is interesting. At
present WCPT does not have the resources for this. [For those who are
not familiar, WCPT is a very small organisation - only 2 permanent
members of staff. I'm with them part-time for a limited period and a few
others are working on Congress]. It might help to explore this debate
with others particularly interested in this issue and it would be well
suited to WCPT's EBP mail-list (details on WCPT's EBP area of its
website www.wcpt.org) which includes many people linked to their
professional associations therefore able to give differing perspectives.
We had also hoped that international projects might develop through
partnerships that could be fostered via this list and the Member
Organisations of WCPT.
I hope this is helpful
Regards
Tracy

Subject: Re: [PHYSIO] evidence based practice [Attn: Frank Conijn]
Dear Frank
Sorry for this delay with responding to your message of 8 Feb 2003 - I
was out of this country.
I think formulation of pertinent research questions is very important.
However I did rather mean a practical performance of research to answer
questions which are already put in the realm of PT. For example: what is
the MAIN mechanism of influence of ultrasound - thermal or oscillatory
(or thermal through oscillatory)? Or: which of the known PT agents is
most effective to relieve pain in the case of knee arthritis? Or: what
is the average share of the placebo effect in total clinical outcomes of
usual PT procedures? Etc. Such questions have already been put, and we
need only a support and qualified professionals (better - enthusiastic)
to carry out a series of appropriate research (properly designed, of
course!) in various teams of PT investigators worldwide.
I was simply addressing to the world PT community to consider creation
of a global PT research network to solve pertinent problems/tasks TODAY,
not tomorrow.
At the same time, I hope your efforts as to a new quality score list
related to a high-quality study will definitely be successful and
accepted by the World Confederation for PT as soon as possible.
All the best,
