medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (20. February) is the feast day of:
Sadoth (Shahdost) and companions (d. c. 342) Sadoth was bishop of
Seleucia-Ctesiphon. He and his clerics went into hiding when Shapur II
came to the throne and began his persecution of Christians. But (according
to an early vita) S. had a vision in which he was called by God to
martyrdom. Sure enough, he was arrested along with 128 others in the
second year of Shapur's reign. Most were killed immediately; S. and eight
others were imprisoned for five months and tortured before they were
finally executed.
Eleutherius of Tournai (d. 532) Eleutherius became bishop of Tournai in
486. He was very active as a missionary, converting many non-Christian
Franks as well as Arians. He finally died of wounds after being attacked
by annoyed Arians.
Eucherius of Orleans (d. 743) Eucherius was dedicated to God at birth, and
when old enough entered the monastery of Jumieges. But when his uncle, the
bishop of Orleans, died, Eucharius was elected as the new bishop. He
didn't hold his see in peace, though; he protested Charles Martel's
confiscations of Church revenues, and encouraged others to do the same.
Charles responded by exiling E., at first to Cologne, but when he proved to
popular there, moving him on first to house arrest and finally to a
monastery where he spent the rest of his life.
Wulfric of Haselbury (d. 1154) Wulfric was a priest of Somerset who in
1125 became a recluse at Haselbury. He indulged in a very severely ascetic
lifestyle and was rewarded with the gift of prophecy. He had many
visitors, including Kings Henry I and Stephen. Wulfric worked as a copyist
and bookbinder in his cell. W's cult caught on only about 30 years after
his death, and for the following 50 years many miracles were reported and
Haselbury became a popular pilgrim attraction.
