Hello,
I hope you don't mind my posting this message to your list. It is about the
annual CILIP Roadshow, an event which has happened for a number of years.
It is a proposed change to the traditional event or rather the creation of
an option that can be taken up or not as the department prefers. It would
be staged at a time convenient for the library and information departments
and with plenty of notice for maximum participation from CILIP and partners.
I hope you'll have time to have a look at the following and if you have
suggestions or think this is worth pursuing please contact me.
With best wishes

Portfolio offer
to University Departments delivering
Library and Information Related Courses
Premise.
The Library Association Roadshow has had a long and varied history. From
major events incorporating Enterprise elements such as publishing and
recruitment; membership representation from Groups and Branches to a one-
person visit to describe and promote the work of the professional body.
With the inception of CILIP it is a good point at which to review this
longstanding event to consider changes.
Purpose of Roadshow visits.
Primarily to recruit students as members of their professional
organization. Concomitant benefits are informing students who are already
Members of the importance of professional Membership, to ensure they get
the most out of CILIP and remain Members. Encourage staff to join. To
help the Department offer professional issues content to their courses.
The future
CILIP is uniquely positioned to offer great value to Library and
Information Departments, having highly placed members of the profession who
regularly talk to students in the course of an academic year, eg the
President, councillors, the Chief Executive, directors. There are
Professional Advisers who travel around the country leading workshops and
speaking at Chartership events.
Coordinating resources makes sense on a number of fronts: CILIP wants to
reach students and has a duty to inform them about their professional body.
It also has a duty to support colleagues following Chartership programmes.
Students also want to know about Chartership as it is a likely stage after
they qualify and they need to know how relevant it is and the processes.
Sharing an event with Chartership candidates they meet professionals at all
stages of their careers: new graduates and people at management level all
working towards this qualification and which they as workers in the
profession value. Chartership candidates will also have an interest in
hearing about their professional body. CILIP is brand new and they will
have an interest in hearing about CILIP developments, which would be
addressed in a traditional Roadshow type talk, it should also help with
their professional development. They may also be thinking about becoming
more active in their Branch or within Groups, so again they will be
interested to hear about events and meetings.
A Portfolio Offer
This is a modular offer we imagine being made to University Departments
currently offering CILIP accredited courses:
1. High level presentation – directors, chief executive, President.
2. Recruitment to Membership / address to current Members about work
of CILIP and why they should remain in Membership.
3. Employer representation/participation. Local employers /
recruitment agency.
4. Branch & Group representation.
5. Subject offer (workshops/speakers to support curriculum.)
6. Professional development (Chartership element – to serve local
candidates and to inform students about this process)
Universities could choose all or a selection from this portfolio. The
stipulation would be that a date would be fixed the previous term to allow
time for volunteers from Branches and Groups sufficient notice to arrange
attendance.
Conclusion
The idea of a Modular or Portfolio Offer would seem to benefit both CILIP
and the University departments.
