italian-studies: Scholarly discussions in any field of Italian studies
I have used both the Waldman and the Reynolds to good effect, in
large classes and small ones. Personally, I prefer the Reynolds,
because it is more musical, allows students to approach some
understanding of the octave stanza, and has a playful tone that is
lost in the prose. Students are less likely to slip into calling the
OF a "novel" if the text appears in rhymed stanzas, and they can
quote by canto, octave and line. The Reynolds edition also has handy
maps, list, and indices. On some scores, Reyolds is even more
accurate in her rendering of Ariosto's lines. The prose Waldman, on
the other hand, comes in a single volume, which is handy and notably
easier on the student budget. Waldman uses headers indicating canto
and octaves appearing on that page, and he puts slashes between the
Ariostan lines in his prose, but the octaves and lines themselves are
not numbered within the text. His translation works well, I think,
for courses where Ariosto must be read fast, among many other books,
or as a background text (say in a history or art history course).
Really we are fortunate, because these two options are both good, and
they both remain in print.
