‘What is happening to health and inequality’
Charied by Professor Mel Bartley, UCL
Abstract
Following the publication of the Black Report in 1980 empirical
evidence of the extent of health inequalities began to accumulate in
greater and greater quantities but the issues failed to score highly on
the policy agenda. With the election of the new Labour government in
May 1997, health inequalities emerged from the policy wilderness. Sir
Donald Acheson's Independent Inquiry reported late in 1998 and a
tranche of policy statements, initiatives and targets followed - all
aimed at reducing inequalities. In this talk we consider the evidence
for changes in health inequalities and other inequalities relating to the
first 5 year period of Labour rule, and ask: what is happening to health
and inequality in Britain now? Has there been any measurable
improvement?
Professor Mel Bartley, UCL, will chair the seminar. Participants are
invited to e-mail questions for the panel prior to the seminar.
The seminar will be followed by drinks at 6pm.
