A tribute to W G Sebald who died in a car accident in 2001. Susan
Sontag has written ‘Is literary greatness still possible?…One of the
few answers available to English-language readers is the work of
Sebald.’ His compelling books (which make intriguing play on ‘first
person’ writing) are much admired by writers and critics. From among
their ranks we welcome Boyd Tonkin, Literary Editor of the Independent,
biographer Carole Angier, memoirist Diana Athill, Anthea Bell,
translator of Sebald’s On the Natural History of Destruction and Bill
Swainson, his first English editor.
