A ceremony was held on 30th January in the European
Council building to mark the official opening of the
European Personnel Selection Office (EPSO). EPSO pools the
resources of the different European institutions in order
to ensure improved planning and organisation of the
recruitment of EU officials. Candidates for EU careers will
thus have one focal point, which will facilitate coherent
planning of competitions and ensure common recruitment
standards and principles. On request, EPSO will also
assist individual institutions in organising specific
recruitment drives, for example for contractual staff. EPSO
will function with an annual budget of just over € 21
million, 11% less than the previous expenditure across
institutions despite the increased workload stemming from
enlargement. EPSO's first priority will be the
organisation of enlargement related competitions for all
institutions, which will start in 2003. (RAPID, IP/03/148)
