Dear colleagues
We are writing to inform you of our new ESRC funded three year project, due to start in June
2003, at the Universities of Sheffield and Newcastle. Two FT 3 year research associate posts
are available, details of which will be sent to this list in early March 2003.
'Parents, Professionals and Disabled Babies: Identifying Enabling Care'
This project critically examines the processes and meanings elicited in the provision of care for
babies born with physical, sensory and 'mental' impairments as they move from antenatal and
post-natal care into longer-term primary and social care support. We aim to identify responsive
care that enables the disabled child to find a place in the parents' and family's lifeworlds with
positive articulations for future development. We draw on a social model of disability in
conceptualising 'disability' and 'impairment' and prioritise the perspectives of parents. The
fieldwork adopts a comparative (Sheffield and Newcastle) ethnomethodological approach. First,
we engage with the retrospective narrative accounts of parents of young disabled children (aged
<4/5 years). Second, we investigate health professionals' views of enabling care and support for
babies from infancy and early childhood. Third, we trace experiences of care received and
provided by parents of disabled babies (aged 1 month to a year) over a period of 18 months
through narrative interviews. Fourth, we explore interactions between parents and professionals
in negotiating the care of the disabled baby. Fifth, we examine support networks inhabited by
parents. Finally, we identify dominant discourses on 'good parenting' through an analysis of
pregnancy texts, policy and professional documents.
