As global networks grow in significance it is getting more important to
share knowledge and standards. By combining the resources of some of
Europe's national libraries the idea of a single European Library has moved
a step closer to becoming a reality. The European Library (TEL), a 30-month
co-operative project of Key Action 3
<http://www.cordis.lu/ist/ka3/digicult/home.html> of the Information Society
Technologies (IST) <http://www.cordis.lu/ist/> research programme will
provide the groundwork on which to build a pan-European service.
Workpackage 3 of the TEL project which focuses on consensus building
regarding metadata in the TEL context, held a concertation workshop at the
Dublin Core Metadata Initiative (DCMI) conference in Florence on October 14,
2002. This special workshop was meant to present TEL's approach on the TEL
metadata registry and collection level descriptions to experts in these
areas and to get feedback. The session started with a presentation by Theo
van Veen (workpackage leader) on TEL's approach, followed by presentations
by Stu Weibel (OCLC) on metadata registries and Andy Powell on collection
level descriptions. The workshop ended with a panel discussion on these
subjects.
The workshop report is now available on the project website
www.europeanlibrary.org <http://www.europeanlibrary.org>, there Related

there Results -> December 2002.
Workpackage 1 of the TEL project which focuses on relations between national
libraries and publishers, held a workshop at the Koninklijke Bibliotheek in
The Hague on December 14, 2002. In this special workshop "Digital deposit:
libraries and publishers reaching agreement" speakers from the national
libraries of Germany, France and the United Kingdom have delivered an update
of the state of the art of their (legal) deposit of electronic publications.
