LECTURESHIP IN HUMAN GEOGRAPHY
DEPARTMENT OF GEOGRAPHY,
UNIVERSITY OF DUNDEE
FURTHER PARTICULARS
The Post
As part of a programme of continuing expansion, the Department of
Geography will be appointing a new full-time lecturer in human
geography from 1 September 2003. The appointment will be research-led,
with the successful candidate making a contribution in a field cognate to
existing research strengths.
The post arises because of the retirement of Professor Huw Jones and
seeks to strengthen the Department’s research interests focused on
population, health and development issues. Staff have particular
interests in vulnerable populations and welfare issues. There is a strong
research track record on work on skilled international migration,
migration and development, mental health, the analysis of longitudinal
dimensions of population change and health issues, and the effect on
vulnerable populations of the geographies of inequality. Staff have also
taken a leading role in the re-theorisation of population and health
geographies. The Department is also the joint editorial home of the
International Journal of Population Geography. In terms of
development and welfare, staff are engaged on research in both
developing and developed countries, including work on labour market
vulnerability, critiques of social capital, anti-poverty strategies,
restructuring of the welfare state, geographies of social exclusion,
activism and volunteering.
Particularly exciting and ambitious research developments over the next
five years include:
- collaborating in current joint research initiatives on funded
topics including international student mobility, skilled
international migration and regional development, migrant
integration in European cities, rural mental health,
geographies of dental health, policies towards vulnerable
populations such as asylum seekers, identity and
identification of migrant groups
- establishing the Scottish Longitudinal Survey for data
analysis on demographic and health topics (joint with
University of St.Andrews)
- participating in developing the Centre for Health
Informatics with researchers from Economics and the
Faculty of Medicine (University of Dundee)
- expansion of international collaborations through British
Council-funded links with Chiang Mai University
(Thailand) and An-Najjah Univ. (Nablus, Palestine)
