Some of us at Stirling at one time or another (Paul Duckett, Steve McKenna,
David Fryer) have been working alongside Reachout (RO), a mental health
expressive arts group, based in Alloa for 7 or more years. RO has used a
variety of arts (including theatre, video, cd, poetry writing/reading etc)
to challenge stereotypes and stigma in relation to mental health. I am not
sure how the notion of 'integration' is being used here, perhaps in relation
to learning issues with a mainsteam education integration agenda dimension?
However I am suspicious of the notion of social inclusion and variants.
There have been odd things written about RO in The Community Psychologist,
JCASP etc and a workshop by RO was delivered by DF with PD's assistance in
Perth WA at the 8th Trans Tasman Community Psychology Conference last year
(this workshop had to be repeated because the demand for places was so
great). However our Stirling work with RO is intentionally not 'research''
(though we do extend our understanding) and certainly not 'treatment'
(though it is mental health promoting) and little is written up (whose
interests woulf that serve?). I like to think of our engagement as
collaborative, mutually beneficial, praxis to promote mental health through
dismantling barriers.
