He is of course right in principle. The more
accessible medical services are the more people will
attend, but that is not a good reason for restricting
access. When we moved from split sites to the new
hospital a few years ago we left a MIU at the site of
the old A&E and opened a new A&E on the new site. I
looked at the attendences by postcode and did a
projection based on modest increases from those areas
closer to the new A&E (the biggest increase from the
immediate surrounds. This predicted a 30% increase in
overall attendances. We presented this to the trust
board and the health authority and were met by
disbelief. The health authority were working on a
straight forward split! Our predictions proved
remarkably accurate!
Cheers Fred.
