Well, not really. If a condition needs treating that day in an ED, then it
needs treating that day in and ED. If it doesn't, then the shouldn't be
there regardless of staffing levels.
One trouble we have at the moment is that with increased concentration on
'core' work we have little scope for varying our workload to allow for
predictable fluctuations in staffing; and with our shift work we have little
scope for varying our staffing in response to predictable fluctuations in
workload.
It may seem a bit heretical these days, but a return to doing regular minor
ops lists and elective clinics (with appropriate payment to the trust by
PCOs and this money used to fund appropriate additional staff) would give us
scope to cut our elective work in the first week or so of the new bunch,
freeing up the additional staff for general department cover, supervision
and teaching.
