Landmark is probably the easiest way to get them, but there is nothing stopping you from scanning in original maps, electronically stitching them together and then matching them up to the National Grid. I think that Crispin Flowers did something like this when he was at West of Scotland Archaeology Service, I'm sure he would tell you. I think it really depends on the level of your own IT skills and IT support available to you which route you decide on.
Here in Hampshire we bought in the Landmark maps as a more efficient was of obtaining the data. Now we have a much fuller and more complete coverage than our colleagues in the Hampshire Record Office! They can be very useful, although we did not have them when we did our Historic Landscape Characterisation project.

Subject: Digital Historic OS maps - Advice wanted
Can I ask for advice about getting old OS maps for use on our GIS - is there more than one way to obtain them or is Landmark the only source? Is there any way of making it more affordable?
Thanks
