Young and Old: Linked lives or separate worlds? Research and policy challenges
In many societies, the number of people over 60 now equals the number under 18.
These groups are marginal to the labour market and labelled "dependent". Both have learning needs. Nevertheless, social institutions and culture segregate them from the larger society and from each other. Differences are stressed, commonalities neglected. Research has given scant attention to ties between them. Family bonds are recognized in studies of grandparenthood, but little is known about old-young relationships in society at large. How common is ageism between these two groups? What weakens stereotypes and promotes mutual learning between them? All papers offered should include both young and older people.
