My impression is that most of the descriptions of the "Celtic experience"
are based on outdated or inaccurate sources or only a superficial
acquainatnce with the available sources. There is a need for a study of holy
wells in Ireland that begins with the archaeological evidence found at sites
(in comparison with evidence from British and Gaulish sites), examines the
medieval texts for what they tell us about devotional practices, and
compares it with the folk practices documented in the modern era. There is
also a need for similar study of sites in England, Wales, Cornwall,
Scotland, and Brittany.
