I am very pleased to be able to make the following announcement, and to
invite all of you--whosoever may be able--to join us in May. I promise
that this will be a stimulating, but friendly, day out in Cambridge.
Please feel free to disperse this invitation effectually among your
friends and students!
BRITISH AND IRISH SPENSER SEMINAR
Convened by Colin Burrow, Andrew Hadfield, and Patricia Coughlan
Announcement and Call for Papers
The first annual British and Irish Spenser Seminar will meet on Saturday
10th May, 2003 at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, UK. The convenors
of the Seminar hope to gather and focus the energies of students and
scholars of Edmund Spenser from throughout the United Kingdom and Ireland.
In addition to two invited papers, the Seminar will include two open
sessions, proposals for which are now welcome. Thirty-minute papers may be
proposed on any topic relating to Spenser, his works, his period, or the
works of his close contemporaries. In 2003, the Seminar will take an
especial interest in 'Spenser and History', and proposals on this broad
theme, construed broadly, will be particularly welcome. The Seminar is
also committed to supporting the work of younger scholars, who are
particularly encouraged to apply. The closing date for receipt of
proposals will be 14th March 2003.
The invited speakers this year are Richard McCabe (Merton College,
Oxford), author of Spenser's Monstrous Regiment: Elizabethan Ireland and
the Poetics of Difference (Oxford, 2002); and Bart van Es (Christ Church,
Oxford), author of Spenser's Forms of History (Oxford, 2002).
Participants in the Seminar will be welcomed to morning coffee and
afternoon tea at Gonville and Caius; a reasonable and affordable lunch
will also be available. Some limited accommodation can be arranged around
Cambridge. Participants in 2003 will become annual members of the Seminar,
and may elect to receive future correspondence and announcements relating
to the Seminar's activities. The registration fee for 2003 will be £10 for
the rich and £5 for the raskall rout.
Please send registration requests and proposals (no more than 500 words)
to the Seminar organizer, Andrew Zurcher, either by email
([log in to unmask]) or by post (Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge CB2
1TA United Kingdom), before the closing date of 14th March 2003. All other
enquiries should be directed to Andrew via email or by telephone at +44
(0)1223 335 427. Please see the Seminar's website,
http://www.english.cam.ac.uk/spenser/biss.html, for further information
and announcements.
