From: MAAS Media Online the Managing Agent and Advisory Service for Moving
Pictures and Sound in UK Higher/Further Education
Press Release 6th January 2003
Today sees the first national delivery online of high quality moving
pictures for the UKıs higher and further education communities.
Education Media OnLine now offers access to collections of non-fiction films
for use by some 6.5 million students, scholars, teachers and lecturers in
the United Kingdom providing an invaluable resource to support teaching,
learning and research.
Taking full advantage of the high speeds of data transfer provided by
Britainıs Joint Academic Network, and its high-speed backbone SuperJANET,
authorised users from licensed institutions are now able to download and
play footage from the film collections via computers in lecture theatres,
classrooms, libraries or seminar rooms. Access is also available to bona
fide users off-campus.
The URL http://www.emol.ac.uk will take clients, using ATHENS
authentication, to film collections such as: Films of Scotland, Educational
and Television Films, Sheffield University Learning Media Unit and Anglia
Television Library.
Todayıs launch is the start of a rolling programme of releases. More
collections will soon become available through the MAAS collaboration,
involving the British Universities Film & Video Council and The Open
University, clearing rights and preparing content for delivery. Education
Media OnLine is hosted and delivered by EDINA, a JISC national data centre
at the University of Edinburgh, which also designed and developed the online
service.
Murray Weston, Director of the British Universities Film & Video Council
said "Releases through this new service offer the first opportunity to
sample high quality full-length and segmented moving image material being
made available nationally. It is the start of a form of delivery that will
encourage the integration of these media with traditional text resources for
learning, teaching, research and examination."
"Online delivery of specialist moving pictures points the way to students
and staff having increasing access to media-rich content where and when they
want it. Guaranteed access is the key to greater and more sophisticated use
of moving pictures as scholarly assets".
Education Media OnLine is funded by the Joint Information Systems Committee
JISC and brings together the work of a number of agencies.
