Personal Development Planning
Wednesday, 29th January 2003,
University of Glasgow
10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
Workshop Aims
UK higher education is developing and introducing Progress Files
following a recommendation of the National Inquiry in Higher Education
(Dearing Report 1997). All institutions must have Progress Files in
place by 2005/6.
Progress Files will consist of a transcript of a student's achievement
and a Personal Development Plan. Personal Development Planning is a
structured and supported process undertaken by an individual to reflect
upon their own learning, performance and / or achievement and to plan
for their personal, educational and career development.
The aim of this workshop is to help academics in the physical sciences
to explore the most effective ways of implementing PDPs with their own
students. There will be an opportunity to hear about several PDP models
which have already be developed and successfully implemented with
undergraduates. These may provide 'science specific' resources for
colleagues and students and prevent the re-inventing of wheels. There
will also be an opportunity to discuss the practicalities of
implementing PDPs, how they can be 'sold' to students and to colleagues
and how students can be effectively supported.
The workshop should be of interest to any academic within a
science-related discipline and anyone with a responsibility for
developing or implementing the Progress Files or PDPs.
