**APOLOGIES FOR CROSS-POSTINGS**
Dear Colleagues
I am writing to invite you to contribute to Practice as Research in
the Performing Arts: A National Survey. The project aims to address
the established needs that exist within the performing arts subject
community for detailed information about the provision of 'Practice
as Research' at postgraduate level within the UK Higher Education sector.
The work will be conducted by Professor Robin Nelson, at the Department of
Contemporary Arts, Manchester Metropolitan University. I will be
working as Research Assistant on the project, which is funded by
PALATINE with support from MMU. The project operates alongside PARIP, which
does not specifically address postgraduate issues. This national survey
covers the PALATINE subject areas of drama, dance and music in the first
instance.
The aims of the project are:
- To survey the existing provision of postgraduate PaR regulations and
protocols in dance, drama, music and performance, with a view to
establishing best practice, by disseminating a range of functioning models
(it is not our intention merely to establish one single model of best
practice).
- To locate 'Ten Steps to the Perfect PhD'. We will identify key
issues for those engaged in supervising and conducting 'PaR'.
- To identify current and past PaR students and, where possible,
publish details of their work on line to enable the sharing of
knowledge and experience.
- To provide a survey report to the subject community in printed
and electronic forms.
I would be very grateful if you or a member of the department could
please forward the following information, if possible by the 17th
February 2003:
1. Written guidelines for postgraduate Practice as Research in your
institution.
2. An indication of any issues that have arisen from taking on
Practice as Research Students
3. Names of PaR PhD graduates and students, with email contacts
(with their permission).
It is our intention to publish the work later in the year. In the
meantime, if you have queries about the project, please contact
either Professor Nelson or myself (rather than the list). Many
thanks for your help.
Regards,
Stuart Andrews
