medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear Everyone,
This is going to sound silly, but I'm about to tear my hair out over it.
When I was at St. Peter's last march, I DISTINCTLY remember the altar of Leo
I with the huge relief of Leo repulsing Attila the Hun as being on the left
hand side of the nave, although I can't remember exactly where. I also have
a picture of it that I took at a fairly close range, and I remember looking
at it close up and quizzing my mother (who was with me) on who was in buried
under the altar (she, of course, had no idea and didn't really care as she
was just there to take pictures with me--I just liked to make myself sound
incredibly brilliant).
Now, in the Cardinal Noe book on the monuments of St. Peter's (published in
2000), as in every other book I have with maps of monuments and altars in
St. Peter's, it says that the Leo I altar is way up almost near Paul III.
But that part of St. Peter's was blocked off when we were there. It was
blocked off right before Alexander VII who is on the left side in back of
the baldecchio.
My problem is, that I could SWEAR Leo's altar is further to the front of St.
Peter's along the nave or one of the side chapels, because how else could I
have had such a clear picture (no, mom's camera could not have taken that
picutre from the distance we were at and have it come out so clearly--her
camera doesn't have the zoom power).
I also have a picture of me in St. Peter's from back in 1999 and in the
background is the Leo monument with people all around it, but St. Peter's
was blocked off the same way when I was there then (I remember because I
desperately wanted to see Paul III's monument up close but couldn't).
Now, learned scholars, am I losing my mind, or did they move Leo's altar
between 2000 (when Noe's book came out) and 2002, when I went in March? I
highly doubt it, so either Cardinal Noe is wrong, or I am losing my mind.
But how did I get that picture and how was I able to walk up to it if it was
far away in a blocked off area???? Am I bi=locating and am not aware of it?
Like I said, I know this is silly, I must be wrong, but has anyone been to
St. Peter's lately who remembers where St. Leo's altar is?
I'm actually losing sleep over this...
Thanks in advance,
Wendy Reardon
