The Web today is not just about words and pictures. Video and
audio are more and more common. What benefits do they bring,
and what problems? When is it best to use a streaming method of
delivery for these resources, rather than a straight download?
Which technologies should you choose, and what infrastructure do
you need to support them?
Applications cover a wide range of areas, from distance learning to
radio programmes on the Web, even to pornography (although we
shall not be covering that).
Indeed, this topic could be said to be crossing the dividing line
between publishing and broadcasting, but the most important
aspects for this group are:
* that the media assets are made available on the Internet for
people to access when and where it's convenient to them;
* that the most appropriate medium is used for obtaining access.
The meeting is intended to examine some of the questions implied
in the above, with contributions covering:
* an in-depth look at streaming technologies (from the points of
view of the user and the content provider);
* case studies of applications in different sectors;
* a look at how streaming media relates to advertising;
* some future predictions.
Speakers (subject to final confirmation):
Kate Worlock of EPS Ltd will give an overview and an introduction
to the day.
Mohammed Ghanbari of the University of Essex will describe the
principles of video coding, with specific reference to H.263,
