OCD's pretty darn biochemical (BTW, before anyone
flames me for saying so, I have OCD myself, as do a
number of my family members.)
That said, the actual content of OC behaviour is
often culture-bound, and social responses to it can
be more or less enabling/disabling.
I can't recall the exact title of the book, but
there's a short scholarly work on stigmata and eating
disorders (both physical conditions have a strong
link with OCD) that looks at these experiences in
social context over a long period of history, and in
a number of European and non-European cultures. If I
can dig up the title, I'll send it to you directly.
It's not a direct ref, but there are things you can
extrapolate from it.
Formulating a good social response to OCD can be
really difficult, whether you're a family member or a
professional or a friend. One of the characteristics
of the condition is a tendency to involve other
people in your OC behaviour, particularly in the case
of children, and sometimes the OC stuff ends up
ruling the entire household and each person in it's
relations to the rest of the world. It can be a
really painful situation for everyone involved, very
limiting in terms of being able to make positive
choices and even perceiving that you have any options
to choose from.
I'd be curious to know more about what you're working
on re: this topic.
