Laurie has gotten hold of a nice group of topics and in this instance, he
would like to solicit short papers on these items from anyone in a position
to comment knowledgeably. The topics do touch on areas that we have handled
previously from our local experience, and he thought it would be interesting
and provide good debate, to learn how other people and places approach
similar problems. Of course, here in Guyana we lack the infrastructure for
responding to many needs, and laws to ensure the rights for disabled people
are still being developed. This is where responses to problems may differ;
but it will be interesting to hear what we can and should aim for.

SEMINAR 2003 ..MARCH 27th &28th.
THEME: A WAY FORWARD IN DEVELOPMENT
PRESENTATION:
(1) Education and Training for Learners with Special Educational Needs.
(2) Supportive Employment Models for Persons with Disability.
(3) Definition and classification for Persons with Disability.
(4) Supporting Parents to Protect and Promote the Rights of Disabled
Children.
OBJECTIVES:
This seminar attracts participants to discuss and explore ways of
employment. A supportive employment model for the disabled.
To encompass other groups of people who are disadvantaged and discouraged on
the open lead market and who are disengaged from the open lead market. It
reflects the growing need to develop and improve an employment service to
include all forms of disability; to include people with disability living in
our rural community.
The Seminar will concentrate on the needs of the business community and
examine ways to support employers.
Supporting Parents to Protect and Promote the Rights of Disabled Children.
1. To provide information and assistance on a variety of issues.
2. Coming to terms with emotional turmoil, giving birth to a disabled child.
3. Problem with the feeding, education and practical care. Parents can be
totally isolated
having a disabled child.
It can be difficult to access accurate information on the child’s condition,
prognostic and potential. Here we need professional and community support
for the optimum development of the child.
Education and Training.
Education and training must be available for disabled children and adults
even the most severely disabled ones living in rural areas.
Basic criteria and curriculum goals must be met when developing educational
services for the disabled children and adults.
This service should be individualized to meet the needs of disabled
childdren and adults and must be agreed upon by authorities, administrators,
parents and disabled children.
To identify special needs for persons with disabilities against examination
services and facilities that are available. We need to examine policies and
programs and make recommendations to lecturers and educators for the
improved training for persons with disabilities within the region.
Classification and Definition
To enhance participants with the knowledge, and promote greater
understanding of definition and clasification; with great emphasis on the
social and environmental impact on the lives of persons with disabilities.
End.
