The European Institute of Social Security is holding its next Research
Workshop for 'Young' Researchers - this is for PhD students or newly
starting researchers. The deadline for application is January 10 but I
believe that late applications can still be accepted after that date if the
Workshop is not already full. Membership of EISS is certainly not a
requirement.
Previous participants have spoken very highly of these interdisciplinary
workshops - and the location this year, Marstrand, is a lovely and very
small island north of Goteborg.
I attach below the letter which begins the attachment about this - more
incl. the programme is in the attachment.
I will be glad to give any more information I can but I will be away until
13 January

Leuven, 4th of November 2002
From the 10th until the 17th of May 2003 the Swedish section of the European
Institute of Social Security together with the Secretariat General of the
E.I.S.S. will organise the fourth Workshop for Young Researchers. This time
the Workshop will take place in Marstrand, one of the islands in the
archipelago at the west coast of Sweden, which will be reached from Göteborg
in about 1,5 hours by bus.
The Workshop for Young Researchers is aiming at giving young researchers
(with at least one year research experience) a forum for discussing their
research topic and the opportunity to get acquainted with methodological
issues related to comparing social security systems of various countries.
The Workshop week contains five lessons on comparing social security (in
general, from a statistical, a legal, a sociological, and an economic
perspective), taught by experienced social security professors from all over
Europe. The main focus however is on the presentation of the research
participants are carrying out and the discussion of the topics they are
dealing with. To that end every prospective participant is asked to send in
a paper of approx. 10 pages summarizing his research topic and the issues
he/she would like to discuss with fellow participants. Every person who is
admitted will also have to prepare a critical analysis and comments upon the
presentation paper of one other participant. At the end of the week an
exercise on writing a project proposal will be made.
The cost (accommodation including breakfast, lunch and dinner; transport
Göteborg Landvetter Airport Marstrand and back; excursion) will be 450
Euro and will have to be paid on beforehand.
All researchers interested in joining this Workshop week for young
researchers can apply for admission by sending in an application to the
address below not later than by February 1st, 2003. The number of
participants will not exceed twenty persons. Decisions on admission will be
notified before March 2003; in case of admission, the participant will have
to send in his/her presentation paper at the latest by March 10th.
