Tom,
Lenin did not lead to Stalin. The failure of the revolution in Germany, the invasion of Russia by western armies, the terror of the white armiesand the subsequent collapse of the economy and working class is what led to Stalin. The disability movement could do worse than learn a few lessons from Lenin. What Lenin was getting in the qutoe that Liz mentins is that theory on its own is useless. He also made the point that action without theory is also useless (but not a danger that the disabilty movement appears to be in any danger of!)
Likewise please don't mis-appropriate Gramsci. He knew the value of organised resistance and the dangers of co-option by the state and bureacracy. It is just a shame many leaders in the disability movement haven't heeded his warnings on this.
DAN has its problems, but please don't attack those elements of the movement which are still doing something. So much of the movement has disintegrated into self-help and 'advisory groups' we need organisations like DAN more now than ever. Analysis is important but not if that means making alliances with those that oppress us.
Jules.
